Baby Lotions, Danger or Herd Complex? I Can’t Decide.
I tried really hard not to fall victim to the perceived dangers of baby lotions and soaps. I know there is formaldehyde in them, just about all of them. It is a preservative, so they last longer on the shelf and don’t mold. I know that formaldehyde has been in them for decades if not a century. Unless you digest large quantities of the lotion or soap, it most likely will not harm you. But yet there I was today in the store, buying baby shower gifts and hesitating at the baby toiletries and thinking I was not going to buy any just in case. I still can’t help to think that I fell into the trap of the herd complex.
I have read in many articles that the preservatives that are in these products are so small but helpful in preventing mold and deterioration of the products that they do not cause health problems. As stated the same preservatives that they use are found in nature and found within humans.
So, if you are not familiar with what I am talking about let me catch you up to speed. Back in 2015, the big baby lotion company stated that they removed all the preservatives from their products. An Article noted that this removal of preservatives was a marketing ploy due to the increasing social media concern about chemicals in products that are causing health problems. They were sued and gave out hundreds of millions of dollars; hence why they make the statements showing that they listened and did as the public asked.
Personally, I think it may have been a campaign to frustrate some of the big companies and cause social media nervousness. People love to try to take down “the man.” I have noticed that the people who speak up in social media and start the frenzies are the same people who give you the side eye at the park because your kid got dirty or is playing without you. OMG, he is seven he can play without me!!!
And yet, I hesitated in the baby aisle starting at all of the good smelling baby lotions. Oh, the joy of social media influence (that is why I started this blog). Even knowing all that I know about the truth of the preservatives I didn’t buy any for a new baby coming into the family.
I have walked around my house and found the same preservatives in just about all of our personal products. I am not going to go in to complete overhaul due to a social media frenzy and throw away all of our products. I bet the products we use today are probably safer than when we were children, and the regulations were different.
I am going to say use the products. If you have a skin condition talk with the doctor, that is a different game. I am going to use the products that I am comfortable with and call it good. I can’t be overwhelmed with all the what ifs. I am going to have to stop drinking the baby shampoo…
What do you think?
Do you think about the ingredients in the body care products you use?
Do you think it is all hype to steer you away from big companies?
